Harley-Davidson profits speed up
BBC News, 1/19/06
Motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson has seen its annual profits accelerate, boosted by growing international sales.
The iconic American manufacturer said its full-year profits rose by 8% to $959.6m (£546.6m), compared with $889.8m in the previous year.
Harley-Davidson has increasingly seen a market for its motorcycles and merchandise abroad, where sales growth is outstripping that at home.
Global sales rose by 13% in the fourth quarter, compared with 3% in the US.
"We believe the prospects for retail growth remain strong," said Harley-Davidson chief executive Jim Ziemer.
"Our Harley-Davidson motorcycle shipment target for 2006 remains in the range of 348,000 to 352,000 units." _________________ Peter Gibbons

As US GDP grows, the company can probably keep growing, but I'm not so sure if Harley-Davidson can grow at a much higher rate than GDP growth rate. _________________ Online Finance Education :: College Degrees |

It is interesting to think about the future of motorcycles in general. It seems as long as there are roads, there will always be a demand for motorcycles. Motorcycle enthusiasts are the evidence for that. _________________ Peter Gibbons

To give credit to Harley-Davidson, they're really not making(/marketing) motorcycles as transportation tool that consumes ton of oil and pollutes the environment. They are making(/marketing) motorcycles as status symbol, hobby and entertainment. This is probably when their business is going well. _________________ Online Finance Education :: College Degrees |

Yes, what do motorcycles typically get per gallon? Is it somewhere near 60 miles per gallon? Maybe it is better than that... _________________ Peter Gibbons

It looks like most of them get between 50-60 mpg on the highway, and 40-50 mpg in the city. Some get only 30-40 mpg in the city, though. It probably does not help that the Harley bikes are so heavy. _________________ Peter Gibbons
