Disney In Talks To Buy Pixar
Forbes.com, 01.19.06
In the headlines this morning, Merrill Lynch posted strong fourth-quarter profit due to solid trading revenue.
The investment bank reported earnings of $1.51 a share, topping Wall Street's forecast of $1.30 a share and the year-ago $1.19 a share. Revenue jumped 15% to $6.78 billion, with investment-banking revenue growth of 17%. For the full year, Merrill's earnings were up 18% to a record $5.2 billion.
U.S. stocks were opening higher--and recovering after yesterday's selling. Oil prices were up, hovering around $66 per barrel, while the U.S. dollar was mixed against other currencies.
On the economic front, U.S. jobless claims fell by 36,000 to 271,000 last week. The U.S. Commerce Department reported that housing starts in December fell by 8.3% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.9 million. The decline marks a nine-month low. For 2005, construction of single-family homes hit a record high of 1.7 million units.
In other news, The Wall Street Journal is reporting that The Walt Disney Co. (nyse: DIS - news - people ) is in serious negotiations to acquire Pixar Animation Studios (nasdaq: PIXR - news - people ). Sources say Disney would pay a nominal premium to Pixar's $6.7 billion market value. The deal would make Pixar Chief Executive Steve Jobs Disney's biggest shareholder. _________________ Peter Gibbons

This is pretty interesting. While we all know that Steve Jobs' main focus has been Apple, becoming the biggest shareholder of Disney would be no small event. _________________ Online Finance Education :: College Degrees |

There was a movie out called "The Pirates of Silicon Valley". It describes the beginnings of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and their intersecting paths. Very interesting movie if you have a chance to see it. It stars Noah Wiley and Anthony Michael Hall. _________________ Peter Gibbons

How do you rate the movie compared to movies like Startup.com and Smartest Guys in the Room? _________________ Online Finance Education :: College Degrees |

I didn't see those movies. Are they quasi-documentary types dealing with Internet-techie topics? _________________ Peter Gibbons

Startup.com is a movie about one start-up company during dot-com era. Great movie. Smartest Guys in the Room is about Enron. Another good movie. _________________ Online Finance Education :: College Degrees |

If I get a chance, I will check them out. I was surprised by Pirates of Silicon Valley, so maybe I will also like those two movies as well. _________________ Peter Gibbons

Oh, I still haven't watch this movie. I've got to watch this. "Barbarians at the Gate" is another business movie, though I personally like Startup.com and Smartest Guys in the Room better. _________________ Online Finance Education :: College Degrees |

On the subject of good business movies, how about Glengary Glenross? Or how about Tin Men? Two totally different styled movies, but good ones about their respective industries. _________________ Peter Gibbons

Tin Men is Danny DeVito and Richard Dreyfuss as aluminum siding salesmen in the 1950's or 60's (I cannot remember for sure). _________________ Peter Gibbons
