People HAVE to drive (or so they have become accustomed to it) and so the price of gas can keep climbing before it hits anyone to the point of changing their lifestyle.

Maybe in the US. But in the UK I think it's a little different. Sure... people have to drive here too, and often public transport options aren't that great. However, our fuel prices are heavily taxed and, when I last looked, we paid something like four times as much per gallon of fuel. There would soon come a point, I think, if our prices went up significantly further, that people would cut down their tendancy to drive.
