There's a lot of speculation about house prices in the UK and what they will do over the next few years. Many predictions seem to state that they will fall. That seems inevitable in the not too distant future.

But what I find really curious is the data that's available for the current time, or the month just gone. Even with those figures, people don't seem to agree about what is happening here and now.

For example:

House prices rise slightly in December

House prices fall for sixth successive month

These two headlines - from the same newspaper - don't agree. How can we possibly predict what is going to happen in the future if we can't even agree on what is happening now?
